El 11 y 12 de junio estaré en Helsinki presentando el artículo titulado: "Seeking constructive synergy: Design Science and the Constructive Research Approach" escrito en conjunto con Kalle Piirainen y cuyo asbtract es: Information systems research and management science create knowledge which can be applied in organizations. Design science, which specifically aims at applying existing knowledge to solve interesting and relevant business problems, has been steadily gaining support in information systems research. However, design science is not the only design-oriented framework. Accordingly, this raises the question of whether it is possible to compare the results obtained from different brands of design-oriented research. This paper contributes to answering this question by comparing two research approaches, enabling mutual learning possibilities and suggesting improvements in transparency and rigor. The objective of this paper is thus to compare design science research with the constructive research approach. The conclusion is that the two approaches are compatible, save for details in practical requirements and partly underlying philosophical assumptions, but both have something to teach each other about how to define and execute design-oriented research in information systems and management science.

Capítulo de libro: Anonimización de historias clínicas electrónicas
Ha salido publicado el capítulo "Proposal for Interactive Anonymization of Electronic Medical Records" del cual soy co-autor en el libro Information Systems and Technologies for Enhancing Health and Social Care.
Abstract: One of the most important inputs for medical research is the information registered in electronic medical records. This information typically contains sensitive data that must be preserved in order to be used for research or educational purposes, and protected depending on the regulations of each country and institution. In order to assure confidentiality of data, different techniques can be used to remove basic identifiers (e.g. names, IDs); however, these techniques can be easily bypassed by attackers who know the information that can act as pseudo-identifiers of patients (e.g. birthdates, gender). Although these pseudo-identifiers can also be removed, the information they contain is valuable for medical research. To face this problem, different methods that allow minimizing the risk of sharing confidential information have been proposed. The interactive use of anonymization algorithms for electronic medical records is the main contribution of this chapter, dubbed AnonymousData.co: a proposal for anonymization of electronic health records.

Director Departamento de Ingeniería de Sistemas
Empezando este nuevo año, me posesionaré como nuevo Director del Departamento de Ingeniería de Sistemas de la Universidad Javeriana. El nombramiento por parte del Vicerrector Académico se dio en diciembre, pero oficialmente asumiré el cargo el 15 de enero.

El profesor Alejandro Fernández me ha invitado a participar del programa de UN Radio "Discursos Sostenibles". En media hora hablamos del rol contemporáneo del conocimiento y su gestión tanto en la industria como en la academia, teniendo en cuenta la corriente general del programa: desarrollo y sostenibilidad. Congreso CECAR en Sincelejo
La Corporación Universitaria del Caribe CECAR amablemente me invitó a dictar una conferencia en el marco su primer Congreso Nacional de Ingeniería de Agosto 15 a 17 en Sincelejo.
El título de mi charla fue "Ingeniería y Arquitectura de Software: de vuelta al diseño"
El resumen: El desarrollo de software pasó de ser una práctica más artesanal a una actividad más legítimamente ingenieril hace tiempo. Sin embargo, con la creciente adopción de la arquitectura de software, cabe preguntarse si esa tendencia hacia la “ingeniería” sigue firme o si vale la pena revisarla. Se propone que en ambos casos se trata de diseño de software y que la naturaleza del diseño es la solución de problemas. Esto tiene implicaciones prácticas para la profesión de la ingeniería de sistemas, pero también para la educación e investigación en las demás ingenierías de nuestro país.

Artículo Futures
El artículo titulado "A Systemic Evaluation Framework for Futures Research" del que soy co-autor ha sido aceptado para publicación en la revista Futures.
Abstract: Evaluation of futures studies is a topic that has frequently aroused discussion. Futures studies often deal with great societal or strategic business issues, and thus the validity and reliability of the results is of great interest to stakeholders. Existing literature contains discussions of such important issues as ethics of futures studies, the nature of knowledge about the future, and futures methodology, which together contribute to the quality, validity and credibility of futures studies, but discussion on the evaluation of futures studies is more scant.
Thus, the main research question that guides our study is: “how should we evaluate futures studies to ensure the reliability and credibility of the results?” We answer the question by deriving a systemic framework for evaluation following the input-process-output schema to ensure that the whole chain from the data to reporting and implementation contributes to the quality and impact of the study.
The main contribution is the systemic evaluation framework. The framework will contribute to the evaluation of existing and ongoing studies by offering guidelines for evaluation, and as a net effect, we propose, it will increase the impact of futures studies by making the practices more transparent and thus generating more confidence in the results.

Visita Henk Sol
El Prof. Dr. Henk G. Sol estará en la Universidad Javeriana este jueves y viernes. En esta segunda visita el profesor Sol guiará un seminario para estudiantes doctorales (el jueves de 2 a 5pm) alrededor de su noción de "Learning Theaters". Adicionalmente dará una charla el viernes (11 a 1pm) sobre investgación científica basada en el diseño. Es posible asistir a estos eventos si me contactan. Adicionalmente, estará disponible para reuniones personalizadas, según disponibilidad de agenda.
